In de jeugd won hij meerdere nationale titels en mocht ook meedoen aan internationale wedstrijden. In 2011 won Steffan zijn eerste nationale titel, op de slalom. In 2012 en 2013 deed hij mee aan het junioren WK, en bovendien mocht hij in 2013 tussen de grote mannen staan bij het WK in Oostenrijk.
Maar eind 2013 scheurde Steffan zijn kruisband af en begon een periode van revalidatie. In de zomer van 2014 stond hij weer op zijn ski’s. Hij pakte de Nederlandse titel slalom op het NK indoor.
Echter kreeg Steffan weer een zware knieblessure. Het kostte hem veel moeite om zijn lichaam in balans te krijgen. De motivatie ontbrak om nog een keer alles op alles te zetten om terug te komen van deze blessure. Ook heeft Sport2Inspire upgrades binnen het contract van Steffan bewerkstelligd. Bovendien heeft de website, www.steffanwinkelhorst.nl, een professionelere uitstraling gekregen.
Helaas is Steffan Winkelhorst door blessures gestopt met skiën, waardoor een verdere samenwerking uitblijft.
